Toward the end of Surah al-A'raf, in ayah 189,Allah says, He it is Who created you from a single soul, and made from it its mate, that he might find rest in her.
The commentators note that taking rest in one's mate is an indicator that marriage is for more than procreation. It is in fact about companionship and mutual love. The fact that the love of ones mate is directly tied to the connections and point of origin as a single soul gives this kind of love even more weight. On page 476, the authors note that, "Al-Zamkhshari maintains that the love from one's spouse is therefore similar to the love for one's child, insofar as the love of both derive, to some extent, from the sense that they are part of one's very being."
This beautiful sentiment revives my belief in love between mates as primordial and long-lasting. If God has made this love inherent in our nature, as a result of our connection to Him, then hope endures.
